US Immigration Visa—Green Card

Green card status is the pinnacle of alien status in the USA. A foreigner applying for an L1 visa for relocation to the USA, for example, would be able to live and work in the US for the duration of the issued visa but is required to leave the United States on the expiration of the visa unless s/he has changed status to permanent residence otherwise known as green card status. A green card allows a foreigner to live and work in the US permanently and generally allows for more flexibility in what a person is permitted to do. Thus, whereas the L-1 visa, E2 visa and H1B visa are all well known temporary avenues to the US, the green card provides permanent relocation.

An application for a US immigration visa must be filed to acquire green card status. Thus, this is different to citizenship which can be acquired after five years of permanent residence in the USA or three years if married to a US citizen.
